A dial that never left the factory finished: Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 "Double Red" MK3, professionally relumed by Horoluma
Every now and then something lands on our desk that, strictly speaking, should not exist. This dial is one of those cases.
An original, brand-new Rolex Sea-Dweller 1665 dial in the rare MK3 "Double Red" configuration. Never installed, never worn. It went through the entire production process: the finish, the complete printing with the two red lines SEA-DWELLER and SUBMARINER 2000, the chronometer text, the minute track, everything flawless and exactly where it belongs. Only one single step was missing: the luminous material was never applied. The indices were empty.
Dials like this do not turn up by chance. They are the result of years in the market, a solid network and the ability to assess a piece the moment it is on the table. That is what JMP Watches Munich stands for. And that is exactly why we knew what we would not do with this dial.
Far too often, unfinished or relumed dials are quietly reworked and then sold as untouched. That is not how we understand this business. If a dial like this is going to be relumed, it has to be done openly, traceably and by someone whose work is recognized in the watch world.
In this field there are not even a handful of renowned relume artists accepted by the watch community. We approached our partner Horoluma. Horoluma is one of the leading names in Germany and equally worldwide when it comes to reluming and restoring vintage luminous material. We knew what to expect, and the result met that expectation.
What sets this work apart from an ordinary relume is the material. Horoluma has access to original, period tritium lume from old stock. Not a modern substitute in a tritium look, but genuine tritium, the same material Rolex used back then, with the slight radioactivity that is characteristic of it. A material that has long since disappeared from series production and whose availability alone is a rarity.
After careful preparation, the dial was professionally relumed with this original tritium, deliberately in the natural vanilla shade that is characteristic of aged tritium. The result looks the way this dial would have looked leaving the factory back then, and it glows in the dark the way it should. Completed with exactly the material it was originally intended for.
We see a lot of watches and a lot of relume work every day. This one is among the best we have had in our hands so far. The dial is the result of two specialists each doing what they do best: we source and assess, Horoluma completes.
This collaboration piece by Horoluma & JMP Watches Munich is now available for purchase. The dial's complete story, including the video of the relume process, will be passed on openly to its future owner. With a piece like this, transparency is not optional. In our view, it is a duty.
For any questions about this exceptional and rare dial, we are available at any time, and so is Horoluma.
